Why Jessica Jones Is Our New Superhero

She’s twisted, unapologetic, and kicks a lot of ass. And she goes by the name of Jessica Jones.

In November, Netflix released screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg’s new series Marvel’s Jessica Jones, starring Krysten Ritter. It’s based on the Marvel comic book character of the same name and is the second Marvel series, after Marvel’s Daredevil, to premiere on Netflix. Whether you’ve watched the first season already or plan on watching it later, we’ve rounded up a few of the reasons why Jessica Jones is an incredible character.

She Takes Matter Into Her Own Hands
Here at P&B, we always look up to an independent woman who takes charge and Jessica Jones does just that. After a sudden and tragic end to her career as a superhero (she has the abilities of superhuman strength and flight), Jones decides to become a private investigator and chooses to handle cases about other people with superhuman powers and abilities.

She’s Messy & Relatable
Jessica Jones is the furthest thing from perfect. She suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, she has her own set of problems, she lives in a crappy apartment, and she’s a hard drinker. While we’re not applauding her for her flaws and mistakes, we’re drawn to her. It’s nice to see someone who we feel like we can bond with over some beers or drinks when the going gets tough.

She’s Not Your Typical Marvel Protagonist On Screen Nowadays
Sure, we have Black Widow (who we love just as much and always root for too), but unlike Iron Man, who’s labeled as the “snarky” one or Captain America who’s labeled as the “cool” one, Jessica Jones doesn’t necessarily have a label or niche that she fits in. She’s rough around the edges, unapologetic, and has a hard-boiled personality, which makes her so much more complex than other Marvel superheroes. It’s nice to see a superhero who isn’t always just clad in skin tight fabric.

Krysten Ritter
Admit it: Krysten Ritter is hot and she’s fantastic as Jessica Jones. We’ve been crushing on Krysten Ritter ever since she was Jesse’s girl in Breaking Bad and the conniving Chloe in Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23. It’s about time we saw her in a role where she’s a badass leading the way.
