Top 10 Female Stories of 2015

For the second year in a row, Pink & Black is featuring the top ten female entertainment stories of 2015.

Sometimes it’s necessary to give females credit where credit is due.

Let’s start with the most unsavory story: Sansa Stark getting raped on Game of Thrones. While this was terrible, the backlash wasn’t. People freaked out with good reason. It wasn’t in the books, and it wasn’t necessary. Even though it was terrible, the general public and entertainment sites responded appropriately.

Kardashians continue to rule the world. Kendall Jenner has the most liked Instagram photo of 2015, two seasons of Keeping up with the Kardashians aired, a spin-off, Dash Dolls, premiered, and the sisters basically just dominate the news every day. Not a bad year to be a Kardashian.

Jessica Jones crushes it. Jessica Jones proves that people want complex female superheroes without the skintight leather gear. She is changing what being a superhero means and providing quality entertainment while smashing clichés.

Mad Max is amazing. Like Jessica Jones, Mad Max changes the perception of women in media. These women are violent and don’t care. They are in charge, they are furious, and they are female.

Nicki Minaj called Miley Cyrus out. It was VMA madness, plain and simple. Plus it was just great to watch Nicki destroy Miley on TV.

Viola Davis won an Emmy. A truly inspiring moment that was so fantastic that Viola’s daughter went as her mom for Halloween. Just proof that representation matters.

Pamela Anderson will be on the last nude cover of Playboy. This will be her astounding fourteenth cover for the magazine. What was once clandestine and mildly degrading has turned into an art form that empowers women to choose to be naked instead of exploited for it.

Jennifer Lawrence is the EW entertainer of the year. It’s always important to note women who win awards based in pop culture. Jennifer Lawrence is well loved, popular, and everywhere. It only makes sense for her to take this award. She deserves it.

Bruce Jenner came out as Caitlyn Jenner. This is very distinct from the Kardashians. While Caitlyn is hardly the first transwoman in the media, she is the first to transition so publicly. She also brought her privilege of being white and wealthy to really shine a light on the struggle for trans people everywhere.

Adele. What else is there even to say? I’ll just leave her sales data here. Hello from the top spot! That’s why she’s taking this top spot as well as the one created by Billboard.
