TV Shows That Feature Women As U.S. Presidents

Women have been taking the throne as the U.S. president for years… on television. Long before Hillary Clinton put out her presidential bid, television producers and screenwriters of the small screen have played around with the idea of a female POTUS. Here is a list of four television shows with fictional female presidential leaders.

Commander in Chief

Though the series on ABC was short-lived, the show focuses on the character of Mackenzie Allen (played by Geena Davis), her administration, family and the events in her life. She’s unique because she stepped into the role after the former president suddenly passed away.

State of Affairs

Another short-lived series on NBC, the show stars Katherine Heigl as Charleston Tucker. She’s a CIA analyst who prepares and presents the Daily Briefing to Constance Payton (played by Alfre Woodard), the first black woman president.

Scandal

Even though the main storyline revolves around Kerry Washington’s Olivia Pope, the series has explored the idea of a female vice president. Sally Langston (played by Kate Burton) temporarily stepped in after the president went into a coma. In addition, Friends star Lisa Kudrow also had a reoccurring role as a congresswoman who ran for president.

Veep

The hilarious Julie Louis-Dreyfus portrays Selina Myer, the vice president and subsequent president in this comedy series on HBO. The show focuses on Selina’s life as well as her strained relationship with the president.
